  Derek Capo                                               Derek Capo, Chief Executive Officer

Derek Capo is originally from Miami, Florida USA. He received his Bachelor’s of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance at Florida International University. Previously, Derek worked at Smith Barney and at Everest Capital, a $3 billion multi-strategy hedge fund, as a stock and bond analyst. He also owns and operates his own investment management corporation, Capo Capital Management.

Derek is fluent in English, Spanish and conversational Mandarin. He has resided in Beijing, China for the past three years. He likes to teach participants how to successfully bargain in China – it’s his specialty.

Amethyst (Amy) Wytiu, Chief Operations Officer

Amy is originally from the Philippines and received her Bachelor’s of Business Administration at De LaSalle University Manila with a concentration in Marketing Management and her Master’s at Ateneo de Manila in Public Management. Amy also worked for the United Nations, the Mexican Embassy, a World Trade Organization subsidiary and also founded a tropical flower distribution business.

Amy is fluent in English, Mandarin, Tagalog (Philippine dialect), Spanish and Fukien (Chinese Dialect). She has resided in Beijing for the past four years and considers Beijing to be her second home. She enjoys meeting new people.

Zhang Jiajing, Tutoring Program

Zhang Jiajing is originally from Harbin but has resided in Beijing for more than 7 years. In 2007, she received her Bachelor’s degree at Beijing Language and Culture University with a concentration in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. Since graduation Jiajing has professionally tutored students from all over the world. Her love of teaching Mandarin and Chinese culture is what makes her one of Next Step China’s most effective tutors.

Jiajing likes to travel and talk about interesting topics with her students. She also likes organizing activities such as Next Step China’s infamous Dumpling Making Dinner. Jiajing is fluent in English and Mandarin.

Li (Jane) Qingjing, Tutoring Program

Jane is originally from Hubei province and graduated at Hubei’s Television and Radio University. Jane is one of Next Step China’s most experienced tutors. She has been teaching Chinese for more than 15 years. Since 2004 she has dedicated herself to teaching foreigners given her gift to adapt to the demands of students of all ages and proficiency levels. She has taught classes of 30 or more students and private lessons with high level international executives and diplomatic ambassadors. Jane prides herself in her ability to work on strengths and weaknesses of a student using a patient but professional approach.

Jane hopes to not only help students improve their language skills, but also to share the charms of China with them. She loves to spend time with her family, swimming and cook.

Anna Calsina Berna, Program Associate

Anna Calsina is originally from Barcelona, Spain. She received her Bachelor’s in Translation and Interpreting in Chinese and English from Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona having also studied in the US and the UK. She also studied Chinese language at Renmin University of China with a Chinese government scholarship. Before joining the Next Step China team, she was the communications assistant at EU Small and Medium Enterprises Centre in Beijing.

Anna is fluent in Catalan, Spanish, English and Mandarin. She has resided in Beijing for over two years. On her spare time she enjoys learning about history and culture which she shares with the participants while touring around Beijing.

Nicole Liao, Program Associate

Nicole, whose Chinese name is Liao Xuelian, is originally from Chongqing Municipality in southwest China, but has resided in Beijing for three years. Nicole graduated from Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), specializing in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. She is also working with Next Step China on administration and logistics for customers in Shanghai.

Nicole is also an open-minded girl who is also fluent in English and conversational in Spanish. She loves to work in international environment like NSC and she loves to meet people. She really enjoys cooking given the delicious dishes she has made for the team.

Victoria Stoklasa, Marketing Associate

Victoria lived her entire life in Missouri before moving to the beautiful Chinese city of Qingdao. She resided there from December 2012 to July 2013, where she worked as an international communications consultant for Qingdao Aupair United Culture Communications, then as an English instructor for graduate and undergraduate courses at Qingdao University. Victoria has a Master of Arts in Political Science from American Public University.

Victoria enjoys working for Next Step China because she has a fondness for creating communication and fostering goodwill. When she’s not working, she spends time on hobbies such as photography and writing books.

Zhang Lishu, Tutor

Zhang Lishu is originally from Ningxia, China. Lishu has been residing in Beijing since 2006 and in 2010 graduated from the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. While she is tutoring Next Step China’s participants she is also pursuing her Master’s in Second Language Acquisition at BLCU. Since 2007 Lishu has been passionately teaching international students Chinese while also sharing the beauty of her Chinese culture.

Lishu excels at the Chinese arts of calligraphy and knot making. She also likes reading, travel and volunteering on her free time. She has volunteered both at the 2008 Olympic Games and the Jane Goodall Institute, and now teaches English to children with Compassion for Migrant Children. She really enjoys helping others. Lishu is fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English.

Li Hui, Tutor

Li Hui is originally from Shenyang located in the northeast of China but currently lives in Beijing. She studied finance at Shenyang Technical University and earned a certification of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Beijing Language and Culture University. She is excellent in teaching business oriented topics as well as traditional Chinese customs. LiHui always puts a lot of effort to push students to improve their Chinese.

She enjoys teaching students who ask a lot of questions and she also enjoys meeting people with different backgrounds. Her goal is to help every student speak like a native and be fluent in Chinese.

Xu Ran, Tutor

Xu Ran is originally from Beijing but studied in Russia and has experience teaching Chinese to foreigners for more than 3 years. She received her certification of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Beijing Language and Culture University. She is excellent in teaching intermediate spoken Chinese, Chinese reading and Chinese writing. She is proficient in Chinese, English and Russian.

As a teacher, Xu Ran takes pride in understanding the importance of learning a foreign language and the difficulties encountered when learning a second language. She is always eager to teach students who are very motivated in learning Chinese.
