Peking University

Peking University (Beijing University, widely known as Bei Da), the former Metropolitan University of the Qing Dynasty, was established in December 1898. Peking University is the first formally established modern research university and the first national University of China. For over 105 years, Peking University has trained a number of undergraduates and postgraduates. Studying in Peking University is actually the dream of most Chinese students.

Peking University has become a highly reputable center for teaching and research in the fields of pure and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities, and the fields of management and education. Today, most national and international rankings frequently place Peking University as one of the best universities in China. Its aim is to be recognized as one of the best universities in the world in due course.

Peking University was one of the first universities in China to develop programs for international students. It has trained over 20,000 international students over the past five decades. With a strong focus on education and transference of knowledge, the Peking University has become a major player in providing Chinese language training and culture dissemination to foreign students. Every year, Peking University has over 2,000 international students from more than 60 countries studying on campus. Its international students are made up of students from most countries of the world including Western Europe, North America, South America, Australia and all parts of Asia as well as many countries in Africa.

While some are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs, most people come to the University for the Chinese Language Development Program. Peking University’s Chinese Language Center offers twenty levels of instruction from beginner through to advanced level. The curriculum follows standards articulated by the National Committee on the Teaching of Chinese as a Second Language and offers certification at various levels through the HSK. Upon completing the program, the student will receive an official transcript (Certificate) from the University.

Peking University has always placed great importance on academic exchange and international cooperation with foreign universities, signing agreements with more than 200 universities in 50 countries and regions, thus cultivating a worldwide network for academic exchange and collaboration.

Each year over 300 foreign experts are invited to teach, research or participate in conferences at the Peking University. At the same time, Peking University’s faculty and staff make over 5000 overseas visits annually for the same purposes. This enables cross sharing of information and experience between PKU and the rest of the global academic community on the latest cutting-edge developments, with the clear mission of building bridges between the Peking University and the International community.
