The University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, or UESTC, was built in 1956 on the MIT model as a multidisciplinary, electronics- and information science-centered research university. Formerly known as Chengdu Institute of Radio Engineering (CIRE), UESTC has been nicknamed “The cradle of China’s national electronic industry.”

Approximately 25,000 students attend the university, of which 14,000 are undergraduates and 11,000 are graduate students. Approximately 300 international students attend the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. UESTC has cooperative agreements with more than 40 institutions around the world, including top universities and multinational corporations. Over a hundred Fortune 500 companies have offices in Chengdu, providing ample opportunity for students and graduates seeking employment.

The university has more than 3,000 faculty members, including 325 full professors, 483 associate professors, and 7 members of the prestigious Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering. UESTC also regularly invites world-renowned experts to serve as visiting lecturers and honorary professors.

Coursework at UESTC focuses on electronics research, although the university has developed into a multidisciplinary university offering technology, engineering, natural sciences, management, and liberal arts. There are 14 schools, offering the disciplines of Automation Engineering, Communication and Information Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Life Science and Technology, Mathematical Sciences, Mechatronics Engineering, Micro- and Solid-State Electronics, Optoelectronics, and Physical Electronics. In all, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China offers 41 undergraduate degrees, 62 master’s degrees (including MBA and Engineering master’s programs), and 36 Ph.D programs.

The UESTC campuses are located in Chengdu, the capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan Province. There are two campus. The main campus has a large academic library with more than 3 million volumes. The new campus is known for having the largest gymnasium of any Asian university, with 3,000 seats. Together, the UESTC campuses offer dozens of world-class research institutes and laboratories.

Since its founding more than fifty years ago, UESTC has trained more than 100,000 professionals. As early as the 1960s, the university was renowned as one of the nation’s key universities. UESTC is a member of Project 985 and Project 211, Chinese government initiatives to bring a select number of Chinese universities to international prominence and support their research efforts. It regularly ranks among China’s top 50 universities, and is the only university in China to offer all 6 National Key disciplines in the field of electronic and information science and technology.
