Lisa W. Parent Interview

Hi Lisa! When you were searching for a study abroad program in China what did you consider?

My husband and I were looking for the right program in Beijing for our 16 year old son. We had many things to consider:his safety, accomodations, learning Mandarin in the right university and program, private tutors and learning the culture and the city. Most important to me as a mother was that I had to know the program would meet all these requirements and I could feel comfortable.

When you found programs what was your process and why did you end up choosing Next Step China?

I looked at many programs online, interviewed the directors ,spoke to references and compared them all. The ONLY one that came close to our needs for a fantastic learning experience and comfort zone was Next Step China. I was able to speak to the owners all throughtout the research process and they were always available and took the time to speak to me and answer all my (thousands) of questions. They made me feel very comfortable that my son would be in the right environment and he would be safe all the way in China!

Some programs talk the talk but don’t walk the walk, did NSC deliver with its promises?

My son arrived safely-NSC picked him up and did everything necessary to settle him in(bank, stopping for incidentals,phone,skype,etc.).Anytime we needed to call to ask a question or change somethig to work out an itinerary, they were there immediately to help out. This was the only program where I could directly speak to someone with any concerns. The accomodations were above what any other program could provide. My son was also put in an amazing Mandarin program and learned quite a lot. His tutor was exceptional and caring, and they also provided him at our request with another tutor/guide to learn the city and tour around the top sites and practice the language.

Do you think NSC is the right program for teenagers and High school students?

NSC is the the right program for any age student who wants to learn the language and culture and have the best people to be there for them and the parents. It took a lot for me to trust anyone with my son so far away and so young. He had a great experience and can’t wait to go back next year.
