Teaching Working Adults
Many Chinese students continue to learn English after the conclusion of their formal education. When working adults need to study English, it is usually because the responsibilities of their position (or a position to which they aspire) require some degree of English fluency. Most Chinese adults already speak some English, having learned it in school. However, they may not have had any practice speaking, reading, or writing English for a number of years. In most cases, Chinese working adults who need to learn English already have a fairly good foundation in the language and are looking for an intense refresher course.
Of course, working adults’ instruction should be tailored somewhat to their field of endeavor. A person who is employed as an engineer will need to learn technical terms. A person who works in shipping and receiving will need to be able to read and write terms which relate to his or her field. While it isn’t always possible to tailor instruction to a particular student, one-on-one students or small groups tend to be the perfect situation for tailoring your lessons to meet your student’s needs.
