Studying abroad in China offers a treasure trove of unique and exciting opportunities. In addition to studying in China, your student can be involved in volunteering, internships (both paid and unpaid), and teaching.
• Volunteering. Students can participate with a wide variety of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Next Step China’s programs, in particular, seek to pair students with the volunteer organizations that best match the student’s interests and passions. Students considering volunteering in China should be aware that some NGOs require a six month or one year commitment.
• Internships. Many Chinese companies offer internships. Some of the internships are paid, while others are not. Whether your student is paid or not, however, participating in an internship in China is a fantastic resume builder, and can lead to open doors for employment. The majority of students (70%) who intern while studying abroad claim that the experience ignited an interest in a particular career.
• Teaching. Teaching is a highly respected profession in China. You don’t even need to have teaching experience to teach in China. As long as you have a college degree, a willingness to learn and an eagerness to share the English language with the Chinese people, you can be considered for a teaching position. These positions are generally paid.
If you think your student might be interested in volunteering, interning, or teaching while in China, you will want to encourage them to apply as soon as possible. Many of the positions are competitive, and the sooner the process is started, the better chance your student will have of being accepted into the program that most interests them.
Next Step China offers many opportunities for those who want to volunteer or teach. There is a modest fee for involvement, much of which goes to cover housing, transportation, cultural activities, and financial support for the organizations with which your student is volunteering.
