Shanxi University

Shanxi University, established in 1902, is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious universities. It regularly ranks among the country’s top 10 institutions of higher learning. SXU is currently the only comprehensive university in Shanxi Province that provides an education covering all fields of study.

The university was founded in 1902 by a British missionary and the governor of Shanxi province. It was originally known as Shanxi Grand School, and was established to promote the integration of Chinese culture and Western science. The university has undergone numerous name changes over its century-long history; it became known as Shanxi University in 1959.

More than 10,700 undergraduates and 2,200 graduate students attend Shanxi University, of whom approximately 500 are international students. Shanxi University has established academic exchange agreements with more than 50 universities and academic institutions around the world, and remains active in international scholarly collaboration efforts. The highly qualified faculty of SXU includes 1945 full-time teachers, of whom four are academicians of the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences.

As the largest university in Shanxi Province, SXU offers a broad range of coursework covering a variety of disciplines. The university has 18 schools, which cover law, education, philosophy, liberal arts, history, engineering, science, medical science, and management. In all, SXU offers 69 undergraduate programs, 137 master’s degrees, and 48 doctoral programs. Its highest regarded programs include those in quantum physics, philosophy of science and technology, molecular chemistry, quantum optics, translation, and English linguistics. In recent years, the university has acquired an increasing number of national research projects and won numerous awards for its research results.

Shanxi University

The university is located in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, a city with a history of more than 2,500 years. The urban campus has been described as gardenlike, and  awarded the title “Green University” by the provincial government. The traditional north side of campus is complemented by the more modern facilities and architectural styles of the south campus.

The Shanxi University campus is home to a large academic library and dozens of key research centers, institutes, and laboratories, including a National Base of Chinese Language and Culture Education. Its most highly regarded laboratories include the Quanta Optics & Photons Apparatus Laboratory, Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Optical Quantum Devices, Biochemistry & Molecular Engineering Laboratory, and  Research Center of Philosophy of Science & Technology, each considered to be among the best in China in their respective fields.
