Shanghai University ( SHU )

Shanghai University was first established in 1922, and soon became known as the country’s top school for the liberal arts. The campus was later closed due to war, and the campus was destroyed in World War II. The university reopened under the same name in 1983, with a focus on liberal arts, fine arts, business, and law. In 1994, it merged with several universities focusing on science and technology, becoming the “New Shanghai University.”

Today, this large, comprehensive university is considered to be one of the country’s leading research universities. The biggest institution for higher learning located in the city of Shanghai, SHU is part of the prestigious Project 211, the Chinese governmental initiative to recognize the country’s 100 most elite universities.

SHU currently has more than 44,000 students, including 26,000 undergraduates and 8,000 graduate students. Students choose from 68 undergraduate majors, 131 master’s programs, 17 engineering master’s programs, 1 MBA program, 35 Ph.D programs, and 13 post-doctoral programs.

While the university is considered multi-disciplinary, it is routinely recognized for its strengths in engineering-related fields, including Mathematics, Dynamics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Metallurgy, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Communication & Information Engineering, and Control Theory. Faculty members (numbering more than 2,500) include 11 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 428 full professors, and 765 associate professors.

The main campus of the consolidated Shanghai University is located in Baoshan District. This campus is new and modern, offering a number of world-class amenities. Additional SHU facilities are located on campuses around Shanghai, including the Jiading and Yanchang campuses. In all, there are three libraries holding more than 3 million volumes. The campus also hosts an advanced high tech development park and 72 research institutes. The university is known for both fundamental and applied science research, and has won a number of national achievement awards in the sciences.

There are more than 2,000 foreign students enrolled at Shanghai University. The University actively recruits international students and invites renowned scholars to visit SHU as professors or honorary professors. SHU has also sent many faculty members abroad for academic exchange and research. The university has established academic exchanges with dozens of foreign universities.
