Shanghai Jiao Tong University ( SJTU )

Shanghai Jiao Tong University, founded in 1896, is one of China’s oldest universities. Formerly known as Nanyang Public School, Nan Yang College, National Chiao Tung University, and Jiao Tong University, among other names, SJTU is renowned as one of the country’s most elite universities. It is a member of the C9, a group of universities similar to the United States’ Ivy League, and is consistently ranked among China’s top institutions of higher learning.

Sometimes referred to as Jiaotong University, SJTU is a top research university located in Shanghai. This large research university has more than 17,000 undergraduates and 24,000 graduate students. The faculty includes more than 1,900 professors and associate professors, of whom 15 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 20 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, in addition to a number of internationally renowned scholars in a range of disciplines.

Initially specializing in normal (teacher training) courses and foreign studies, today SJTU is a comprehensive university, offering coursework in a variety of disciplines. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is best known for its programs in mathematics, technology, and applied sciences, and was once nicknamed the “oriental MIT” in recognition of this specialization. The university is also associated with 12 hospitals throughout Shanghai, and has a strong medical program.

Of the nearly 42,000 students attending SJTU, approximately 1,600 are international students, who travel from dozens of countries around the world to attend Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The School of International Education (SIE) coordinates the admission, registration, and course offerings for overseas students. It provides Chinese language programs and holds the HSK (Chinese language proficiency exam) five times per year.

SJTU has five campuses, in the Xuhui, Minhang, Luwan, Qubao, and Fahua areas of Shanghai. Each campus houses a number of specialized programs. In all, these campuses house a total of 31 departments, 63 undergraduate programs, 250 master’s programs, 203 Ph.D programs, and 28 post-doctoral programs. The SJTU campuses are also home to 11 national engineering research centers and state key laboratories, among a number of other highly-rated academic facilities.
