Next Step China’s One Year program provides participants a great way to enjoy Beijing or Shanghai throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall. One year in China gives you the best chance of assuring fluency and developing long-lasting friendships and potential business contacts from all over the world. Every university’s language program consists of studying 4 hours a day in a classroom setting with a 1 teacher to 15-20 international student ratio. If you are interested in a one-to-one learning experience with an active exchange of Mandarin and Chinese culture, add private tutoring sessions for 1 or 2 hours after your class, and take your Mandarin classes to an entirely new level.
Next Step China’s University One Year program has two options to choose from:
Spring One Year Program: Runs from February to January of the following year (11 Months)*
Fall One Year Program: Runs from September to July of the following year (10 Months)
*The Spring Term One year Academic Program pricing is higher than the Fall One Year Program as it includes accommodation for the Summer. If you plan on returning home for the summer we will match the Fall One Year Program price.
Below we have provided a list of the universities that offer One Year Programs.

What is my Mandarin level?
Next Step China provides an easy guide to know what Mandarin skill level you have reached. Keep in mind that the difference in studying back home vs. China is vastly different.
Beginner – You have never studied the language or you have done so at a University or language school for about a year totaling 100 hours or less. Beginners are also classified as those who know around 800 Chinese characters or less.
Intermediate – You are a conversational speaker in Chinese but forget many of the words and your pronunciation is not up to par. You have probably studied for about two years at an international University or about 350 hours at a language school. At this level you can recognize about 2000 to 2500 Chinese characters.
Advanced – You can communicate in more complicated discussions in Chinese and you can comprehend the subject matter on a TV or radio station. Reading a Chinese newspaper is still somewhat difficult but you can recognize more than 4000 characters. Next Step China’s tutoring program is highly recommended, given the flexibility of the subject matter we can offer you.
