Nanjing University
Nanjing University, or NJU, was formally established in 1902. The Imperial Nanking University, the predecessor of Nanjing University, was founded in CE 258, making it one of the earliest recorded higher learning institutions in China. Reestablished in 1915, the school became known as Nanjing University in 1949. This national university is consistently ranked among the top 10 universities in China. It is a member of the C9 League, similar to the U.S. Ivy League.
Now one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in China, in the early 1900s, Nanjing University was known as a normal (teacher training) school, as well as a science university containing the earliest modern scientific research laboratories in the country, and the first business school in China. In 1920, the school was the first in China to accept female students.
Today, Nanjing is a comprehensive research university offering a wide range of courses. It is particularly well regarded for natural sciences. Presently, NJU has 21 schools and 59 departments representing social sciences, natural sciences, technological sciences, life sciences, engineering, management, and humanities. In all, Nanjing offers 78 undergraduate programs, 213 master`s degrees, and 147 Ph.D. Programs.
NJU has more than 12,000 undergraduates and 10,000 graduate students. Of these, more than 2,000 are international students. Nanjing University has the largest number of American students of all universities in China.
Nanjing University’s two campuses include Gulou (located in the center of Nanjing City) and Xianlin (a suburban campus located in northeast Nanjing). Most undergraduate programs are found in Xianlin, while Gulou is the base for NJU’s graduate programs. The Gulous campus itself is separated into two sections. North Garden (or Bei Yuan) is where academic and scholarly activities occur, while the living area for teachers and faculty is located in South Garden (Nan Yuan).
The campus has one national laboratory, six national key laboratories, and dozens of additional research bases and laboratories. Among more than 2,000 faculty members are 716 professors, 649 associate professors, and 27 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, among other notable scholars.
In 1994, NJU was one of the first universities accepted into Project 211, a Chinese government initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s top universities. Over the past century, Nanjing University has cultivated dozens of prominent scholars and scientists who have either studied or worked here. Students of NJU enjoy well-qualified teachers, world-class research facilities, and an overall outstanding education at one of China’s most elite universities.
