Lanzhou University
Established in 1909, Lanzhou University, is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious universities. This leading research institution consistently ranks among the top 30 institutions of higher learning in the country. As a member of both Project 985 and Project 211, government initiatives to strengthen China’s top universities, it enjoys substantial support for its research activities. It is widely considered to be the best university in Northwestern China.
Lanzhou University has more than 29,000 students, including 19,000 undergraduate students and 7,000 graduate students pursuing degrees. Of these, approximately 1,000 are international students. Students come from across China and more than 30 foreign countries. LZU is active in developing academic exchange agreements to support visiting scholars and cooperation in scientific research.
Lanzhou University is particularly well-regarded for its programs in physics, chemistry, geography, information science, biology, botany, ecology, history, media, and Chinese literature. In all, there are 23 schools offering a wide range of disciplines, though the university does focus on the sciences. Lanzhou University tends to place an emphasis on basic theoretical research, and has made numerous achievements in the sciences. The university is one of the top Chinese universities in contributions to academic publications and international journals. It is particularly well regarded for scientific research in the fields of Arid Ecology, Plant Physiology, Plateau Atmosphere, Glaciation, Geological Engineering, Theoretical Physics, Nuclear Physics, Organic Chemistry, and Cell Biology.
The LZU campus is located in the city of Lanzhou, the capital city in Gansu province, Northwestern China. There are four separate campuses located throughout the city. Three are in the city center, while the fourth campus is in Yuzhong, about 30 miles away from the center of Lanzhou city. Most of the university’s undergraduate students study at the Yuzhong campus, while graduate studies and scientific research are concentrated in the university’s city center campuses. Most of the city of Lanzhou is highly industrialized; many feel that the Lanzhou University campuses provide a pleasant, quiet break from the more urban areas of the city.
The university operates a number of top-ranked institutes located on the LZU campuses, including a national key Laboratory of Applied Organic Chemistry and key laboratories of Arid and Grassland Ecology, West China Environment, Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, and Grassland Agro-ecosystem. It is also noted for its Analytical Testing Center, which contains more than 20 major scientific instruments and is primarily engaged in the analysis of the structure of matter.
