Henan University

Henan University is a large, comprehensive public university located in Central China. Widely considered to be among China’s top 100 universities, Henan University is highly regarded for a number of disciplines.

Founded in 1912, Henan University, or HENU, is among the oldest universities in China. Originally known as the Preparatory School for Further Study in Europe and America, the school has also been known as  Zhongzhou University, Henan Zhongshan University, Henan Provincial University, and Henan National University. As early as the 1940s, the university had developed into 6 schools, for science, art, law, agriculture, engineering, and medicine. Henan University transitioned to its current name in 1984.

More than 30,000 full-time students attend HENU as either undergraduate or graduate students. Of these, approximately 100 are international students. HENU began teaching Chinese as a second language in 1985; since then, it has attracted hundreds of foreign students. The university has established academic relationships with more than 70 universities in 40 countries. The Centre for Teaching Chinese as a Second language, part of HENU’s International School for Chinese Language and Culture (or ISCLC, founded in 2008) provides Chinese language courses for foreign students.

The faculty numbers more than 3,600, and includes over 800 full or associate professors, among whom 10 are academicians of the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering. Faculty members regularly publish books and academic papers and are granted awards for the research work conducted at Henan University.

This comprehensive university offers coursework in 11 branches of learning:  liberal arts, science, engineering, economics, management, law, philosophy, education, history, agriculture and medicine. There are 26 schools in all, offering 72 undergraduate degrees, 171 master’s degrees, and 16 Ph.D programs. The university places emphasis on both liberal arts and sciences, as well as applied disciplines such as trade, law, and economics.

The university is located in Kaifeng, Henan Province, a famous historic city that served as the capital for 7 dynasties. Henan University has two campuses. The original Minglun campus, in the northeastern part of the city, is known for beautiful green spaces and traditional architecture. Jinming campus, in northwestern Kaifeng, opened in 2001 and features grand, modern buildings.

The facilities of Henan University include a large academic library with noted collections of ancient writings and foreign language publications. Meanwhile, the university’s museum houses a collection of Chinese cultural relics. Henan University’s scientific research facilities include first-class laboratory equipment.
