Harbin Engineering University
Harbin Engineering University, established in 1953 as the Military Engineering Academy, is one of the country’s premier universities for the study of engineering, and consistently ranks among the top 100 universities in China. HEU is a Project 211 university under the administration of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It regularly ranks among the top 10 engineering universities in the country, particularly in the fields of marine engineering, military engineering, and nuclear engineering.
Harbin Engineering University, or HEU, once hosted the PLA Military Engineering Institute, China’s top institute in that field. The university was later divided into six separate universities following the deterioration of China’s relations with the USSR. Now, Harbin Engineering University is considered to be China’s key engineering university, offering programs in engineering science and management with supporting coursework in social sciences and humanities. In particularly, the university is renowned for its programs in ocean and marine engineering, ocean exploration, and nuclear application.
HEU is divided into 15 colleges, which are: Shipbuilding Engineering, Civil Engineering, Power and Energy Engineering, Nuclear Science and Technology, Automation, Underwater Acoustic Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Mechanical Electrical Engineering, Information and Communication Engineering, Economics and Management, Material Science and Chemical Engineering, Science, Humanities and Social Science, International Cooperative Education, and Further Education. The university offers 50 undergraduate programs, 93 master’s programs, and 25 doctoral programs.
Approximately 25,000 undergraduates and 7,000 graduate students attend HEU. Around 500 of these are international students. The university has established cooperative relationships with more than 20 academic institutions worldwide. The faculty numbers more than 2,100 and includes 2 academicians of the prestigious Chinese Academy of Engineering
The university is located in the “ice city” of Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province. Harbin, the cultural and scientific center of Northeast China, is also known for its bitterly cold winters. The campus of Harbin University of Engineering is near the scenic Songhua River, and is home to more than 40 major research institutes, among which are the renowned Chuanda Engineering Technology Designing Institute, Underwater Engineering Technology Research Center, and Nuclear Power Emulation Research Center.
The university stresses scientific research, and projects undertaken here have won hundreds of awards. Harbin University of Engineering is best known for research in underwater acoustic engineering and the design and manufacture of ships and marine structures, navigation, guidance and control. HEU regularly carries out national defense research for the Chinese government.
