University Program FAQ
1. How do I get enrolled with the university of my choice?Back to the Top
Every university has specific requirements. For example, Peking University is a more advanced program and requires a certain level and proof that you have taken classes to be admitted into the program. However, if you are a Beginner all you need to do is fill out our application and choose the school that best fits your current level of Mandarin, we will help you with ever step of the application process.
2. I am currently an undergraduate at a university in the USA, UK, Australia or Europe. Can I receive college credit for the language course I take at any of the universities in China throughout the Spring, Summer, or Fall? Back to the Top
Yes! Whether you decide to choose a Spring, Summer or Fall program BEFORE or DURING your university undergraduate career you are able to receive college credits. All of the universities in China we have programs with are accredited . Nevertheless, each university in your home country has its own system in determining the amount of credits. For example, in the Summer one university may grant the Beijing Language and Culture University One Month program from 3 to 6 credits. As for a Semester or Three Month program it may range from 12 to 18 credits. Want to know how you can get the most amount of credits? After you sign up for any of Next Step China’s program we will provide you with tips and strategies to maximize the most amount of credits with your university.
3. Where can I find a campus map of my university?Back to the Top
As soon as you arrive to Beijing we will provide you with a map of the campus and give you an orientation of the neighborhood you will be staying in as well as well as the university so that you don’t feel lost the first day or school.
4. What is the best way to commute to the campus of my choice?Back to the Top
Each university is conveniently located whether the Luxury Accommodations or University Dorm option is selected. Most of the participants either walk or bike to class. However, bus and taxi are also other methods to commute to school. The commute for each university does vary by mode of transportation but can range from 5 minutes to 30 minutes.
5. Where and when do I get my course textbooks? Back to the Top
All of the universities include course textbooks in the tuition. The textbooks will be given out to the student the first day of class. There is no need for you to purchase these book at the school library. You may, however, purchase additional books at the library for a discount given you are a student at the university.
6.What if I no longer feel comfortable in the course I was placed in, due to incorect level placement… is there a fee in changing courses?Back to the Top
No, there is no fee to change the level or class if you feel the class level is too high or too low. It is very important that the first day of class you quickly review the course materials and speak to your professor to determine what it is that you will be doing throughout the term. If a change is made the professor may grant you a change. Some students are intimidated or too confident in their abilities so talking to our staff and the professors at the universities will really help in determining if you are at the right level.
7. Do the university programs offer optional activities, other than in a classroom setting?Back to the Top
Yes, all of the universities offer after-school curricular activities.
Beijing Language Culture University FAQ
1. What are classes like at BLCU?Back to the Top

2. Are there weekly examinations/quizes in the Chinese language course?Back to the Top
Every professor is different in regards to how they want to test their students. Some professors do pop quizzes to guage the progress of the students. However, One month programs at BLCU only have one exam while longer-term programs or semester programs consists of two exams, a mid-term and a final.
3. Are there any class breaks?Back to the Top
Yes. You actually have three breaks. Two 10 minute breaks and One 20 minute break. There are more details about this in the A day in the Life at BLCU page.
4. How is the grading system at BLCU for the Mandarin Language course?Back to the Top
Short-term programs that are 3 Months or less only have one Final exam. Longer-term programs or semester and one year programs consist of one mid-term and one final exam. The weighting of each is 50% each while some professors consider class participation as part of the final grade, so make sure you go to class and participate!
5. How can I apply to live in the on-campus dorms?Back to the Top
Living on the campus dorsm is an excellent experience, however, there is a strong demand from students all over the world requesting to reside at the university dorms. Therefore, it is very important to apply early so that your reservation for a room in dorms is secure. We would not like to be in the position where you apply near the application deadline and not receive the dorm option of your choice.

The class schedules at Peking University vary depending your speaking, reading and writing level. Classes can be in the morning or the afternoon but never in the evening.
2. Are there weekly examinations/quizes in the Chinese language course?Back to the Top
No. However, professors may like to give pop quizzes to see who has been studying on their own.
3. Are there any class breaks?Back to the Top
Yes, there classes at Peking University are usually not back to back so there is a usually a break. However, there are some instances where classes times are close to each other but it should be enough time to get to your class on time.
4. How is the grading system at Peking University for the Mandarin Language course?Back to the Top
The grading system at Peking University is 100 to 0, where 100 is the highest school and 0 is the lowest. Anyone who adds tutoring to their program has a really good chance of passing the course as the Chinese language programs are very difficult.

Apply early! Dorms are on a first come first serve basis so it is very important to submit your application in as soon as you have already made your decision to study at Peking University.

Classes scheduling at the Beijing Global Village School are very flexible. The classes sizes are usually very small at BGVS and it really makes it easy to learn faster given there is a better teacher to student ratio.

No. There are also no mid-terms or finals.

Yes, classes can be back to back if you wish but there is never less than a 10 minute break in between class.

There is no grading system at BGVS.
